PlanSwift Alternative for Electrical Contractors
The main PlanSwift alternatives for electrical contractors are cloud tools that run in a browser, count symbols automatically and price with electrical labor units. PlanSwift is one of the best-known takeoff tools in construction, and for good reason: it's quick to learn, handles many trades, and has a published price. Electrical contractors usually start looking for an alternative for three reasons: they want to work outside Windows, they want the counting done for them, or they want estimating built around electrical labor units rather than general takeoff. Here's an honest comparison.
Facts about PlanSwift are from vendor pages and review sites, checked September 28, 2026. Sources are listed at the end.

What PlanSwift does well
- Fast to learn. Reviewers consistently call the point-and-click takeoff intuitive.
- Multi-trade. One tool for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, concrete, drywall and more.
- Excel-friendly. If your pricing lives in a spreadsheet, PlanSwift feeds it directly.
- Transparent pricing. Published per-seat prices, which many estimating vendors don't offer.
- Now with auto-count. The 2026 Takeoff BOOST features add automatic symbol counting.
What reviewers praise: Capterra reviewers describe large time savings over paper and manual takeoff, with one saying it "cut our work time in half." On G2's PlanSwift vs. STACK comparison, users rate PlanSwift's ease of setup slightly above STACK's.
Why electrical contractors look for alternatives
From reviews on Capterra and G2, the recurring themes are:
- Windows only. No browser access, so no estimating on a Mac or tablet without workarounds.
- Stability. Several Capterra reviewers report crashes and glitches.
- Support response times. Some Capterra reviewers describe hard-to-reach phone support and long waits for callbacks.
- Dated interface. Some reviewers find it dated next to cloud tools.
- General-purpose estimating. Assemblies and formulas are flexible, but electrical labor units, conditions and proposal language are yours to build.

Feature by feature
Takeoff. PlanSwift's point-and-click count, linear and area takeoff on PDF plans is its core, and reviewers like it. Takeoff BOOST adds Auto Count, which matches symbols across pages, plus Auto Scale and Auto Bookmark; Auto Takeoff for preliminary area and linear takeoffs needs the Core tier. SparkQuote starts from the drawing legend and counts every symbol type across the electrical sheets for your review. How that works, and where it fails, is on our AI electrical estimating page.
Assemblies and database. PlanSwift's Electrical Starter Pack includes assemblies for boxes, conduit, connectors, lighting, power distribution, switches and wire, with custom formulas for labor, material, waste and markup. SparkQuote ships an electrical starter library of assemblies and labor units you edit or replace.
Labor. In PlanSwift, labor is a formula you write into each assembly. In SparkQuote, labor units sit on each item, conditions apply by area, and actual job hours feed back into suggested units.
Supplier pricing. We didn't find a built-in supplier price-service integration on PlanSwift's pages; pricing typically comes from your spreadsheets. SparkQuote imports price lists and supplier quotes.
Revisions. Both offer plan comparison for revisions.
Proposals and output. PlanSwift produces material and cost reports and pushes quantities to Excel. SparkQuote generates the proposal and also exports to Excel.
Platform and support. PlanSwift is a Windows install (Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise 64-bit recommended); SparkQuote runs in the browser. Support experiences differ by reviewer; see the reviews linked below.
Contract. PlanSwift is billed annually per seat, with discounted additional seats and volume pricing for 10+ licenses. Per month, Essential works out to about $167 per seat and Core to $250. Three Core seats are $9,000 a year. SparkQuote is billed monthly or annually; see pricing.
When PlanSwift is the better choice
- You estimate several trades and want one takeoff tool for all of them.
- Your pricing lives in Excel and you want quantities to flow straight into it.
- You prefer a local Windows install with a flat annual seat price.
If that's you, PlanSwift is a solid choice, and SparkQuote may not be.
When SparkQuote is the better choice
- You're an electrical or low-voltage contractor and want estimating built around electrical assemblies and labor units.
- You want to work in a browser, on any device.
- You'd rather review AI counts than click symbols.
- You want the proposal to come out of the same tool.
PlanSwift vs. STACK
Many estimators shortlist both. PlanSwift is a Windows install priced per seat per year ($2,000–$3,000); STACK runs in a browser and lists Takeoff & Estimate from $249 per user per month, with a limited free version. On G2's side-by-side page, users rate PlanSwift slightly easier to set up, while STACK's support score is higher (9.3 vs. 7.7). Both are multi-trade. Our STACK comparison covers it in detail.
Other alternatives to consider
- Trimble Accubid and McCormick: electrical-specific estimating with large databases, suited to larger commercial shops.
- ConEst IntelliBid: electrical and low-voltage database with automatic labor factoring.
For what to look for in any of them, see our guide to electrical takeoff software and the electrical estimating software checklist.
Switching from PlanSwift
- Export your quantities and estimates to Excel; PlanSwift's Live Excel integration and export cover this.
- List the assemblies you actually use. PlanSwift assemblies are specific to PlanSwift, and we found no documented importer for them in other tools, so plan to rebuild your top items rather than convert everything.
- Import your price list and labor units into SparkQuote by CSV.
- Re-run a recent job in SparkQuote and compare counts and totals with your PlanSwift estimate.
- Keep PlanSwift until you've matched a few bids side by side, and check your renewal date so you're not paying for an extra year.
