ConEst IntelliBid Alternative

Updated October 6, 2026

A ConEst alternative makes sense when setup time, click-heavy takeoff or unpublished pricing outweigh the value of a very large prebuilt database. ConEst has been building electrical estimating software since 1989. Its IntelliBid estimating and SureCount takeoff products are known for very large prebuilt databases and automatic labor factoring, and for many electrical and low-voltage shops that depth is exactly the point.

Facts are from ConEst's website and review sites, checked September 28, 2026. Sources are listed at the end.

What ConEst does well

  • Database breadth is among the largest in electrical estimating, including manufacturer-specific items.
  • Automatic labor factoring for height, floors, run length and quantities.
  • Supplier price comparison across multiple local distributors, with job-specific pricing.
  • Support is praised by reviewers.

What reviewers praise: Capterra reviewers point to the size of the database, the prebuilt assemblies and smart substitution, and one calls technical support "second to none." On the Mike Holt forum, estimators have praised its electrical formulas and assemblies for feeders (2022), the cloud version's remote access and backups (2022), and presets for device grades, fittings and ceiling heights that adjust takeoffs automatically (2021).

Why contractors look for alternatives

From reviews, estimator forums and ConEst's own product pages:

  • Setup time. Capterra reviewers describe it as not user-friendly at first, with significant setup before it feels productive.
  • Takeoff input. Some Capterra reviewers call it "very tedious" or "too many clicks."
  • Annual fees and added licenses. A 2016 Capterra review calls them expensive and says a lapsed support plan requires a full renewal. There's no public pricing.
  • Reporting and repetition. Reviewers describe reporting as cumbersome, and a 2021 forum post finds it weaker for repetitive multifamily and hotel work.
  • Two applications. Takeoff happens in SureCount and syncs into IntelliBid for estimating, per ConEst's product pages. Whether that matters depends on your workflow.

Feature by feature

Takeoff. SureCount is ConEst's digital takeoff application. ConEst describes its patented Auto Count as "the only solution that counts all symbol types on a drawing simultaneously" (a vendor claim), and SureCount also produces count sheets for shops that still work from green sheets. We didn't find AI or machine-learning takeoff described on the ConEst pages we reviewed. SparkQuote reads the drawing legend with AI and shows every detection on the plan for review.

Database. IntelliBid's prebuilt database is its headline, with NEC-oriented assemblies ready to use. SparkQuote takes the opposite approach: a smaller starter library for common electrical work, plus your own items. Big databases save building time; small ones save maintenance time. Which matters more depends on how varied your work is.

Labor. IntelliBid ships industry-standard labor units at six difficulty levels, and Automatic Labor Factoring adjusts for height, floors, run length and quantities. SparkQuote applies your units with conditions by area and compares estimated with actual hours after the job. See NECA labor units explained for how difficulty factors work.

Supplier pricing. ConEst supports NetPricer, EPIC and TRA-SER, licensed separately, and compares up to 10 local suppliers. If you price every bid against several distributors, this is a real advantage.

Proposals and job cost. The Pro edition adds change orders, enhanced proposals, bid analysis and temporary job-specific assemblies. IntelliBid supports job cost codes and exports to accounting and Microsoft Office, with a Conest Connect analytics add-on. SparkQuote builds proposals in every plan and exports to Excel.

Platform. IntelliBid runs on Windows on a local network or hosted on CE Cloud, which you can reach from Windows, Mac, Chromebooks, iPads and Android tablets. SparkQuote runs in the browser.

When ConEst is the better choice

  • You want the largest prebuilt assembly database and automatic labor factoring out of the box.
  • You compare prices across many suppliers on every bid.
  • You want on-premises control with a hosted option.
  • You bid a lot of datacom, low-voltage and solar work alongside electrical and want one vendor's database for all of it.

When SparkQuote is the better choice

  • You'd rather start fast than configure a large database.
  • Counting is your bottleneck.
  • You want takeoff, estimate and proposal in one place, with published monthly pricing.

Other alternatives to consider

  • McCormick: NECA-based labor units, a large prebuilt database and strong phone support.
  • Trimble Accubid: deep databases, Trade Service pricing and bid breakdowns for larger commercial shops.
  • Procore Estimating (formerly Esticom): cloud estimating with electrical and low-voltage roots, tied into the Procore platform.

Switching from ConEst

  1. Export your estimates and item lists using IntelliBid's Microsoft Office export.
  2. Pick the items you use. We found no documented importer from other vendors' databases, so rebuild your most-used assemblies rather than the full database.
  3. Import your price list and labor units into SparkQuote by CSV.
  4. Re-run a recent bid and compare counts, hours and totals.
  5. Check your support renewal date, since reviewers report that lapsed support can mean a full renewal to come back.

Questions to ask ConEst's sales team

  • What does each edition cost per user, and what's included in annual support?
  • Which supplier price services do we need, and what do they cost separately?
  • What happens if support lapses and we want to renew later?
  • How long does a typical setup take for a shop our size?

Frequently asked questions

How much does ConEst IntelliBid cost?

ConEst doesn't publish prices; editions (Standard, Plus, Pro) are quoted by sales, and supplier price services are licensed separately. The only prices we found were in a 2007 forum thread, so they aren't current.

Is ConEst cloud-based?

IntelliBid runs on Windows on-premises or hosted on ConEst's CE Cloud, which can be accessed from other devices.

What is SureCount?

ConEst's digital takeoff application, which syncs counts into IntelliBid.

How do I log in to ConEst?

Through ConEst's own website, conest.com, or your CE Cloud access; contact ConEst support for account help. SparkQuote isn't connected to ConEst accounts.

Does IntelliBid include labor units?

Yes. It ships with industry-standard labor units at six difficulty levels and applies automatic labor factoring.
